Diamonds is another song from the album that started out as something goofy and made us laugh, but came to mean something more profound to us as time went on. We were listening to a lot of miami bass at the time, especially artists that drew from house music as well. We were attracted to the soulful r&b and hard-hitting hip-hop elements of miami bass. A blend of these genres is something that we’ve always wanted to include in our music too, and miami bass gave us a blueprint. Artists like Rachel Williams, DJ Sneak, Duke, and Furacão 2000 influenced Diamonds, as well as much of the album. The pitched up vocal sound across the album comes from using Logic’s varispeed, and recording first at a slower tempo before pitching it back up (a technique that’s been around at least as long as Alvin and The Chipmunks). Oscar was in the booth at John Calvert’s Brockely studio and improvised “there’s diamonds in the sky, so put your hands high”. He is giggling at himself all the way throughout, which we kept in the final recording. When we pitched his take back up we couldn’t stop laughing because we thought it was so goofy (but great). As time went on this lyric went from a self-help statement to something extremely sentimental, and a mantra to remind ourselves of what we were trying to achieve in London. “There’s diamonds in the sky, so put your hands high” to us has gone on to mean that there are opportunities at every turn, and you can go as far as you dream as long as you back yourself. Diamonds is about how you stand in your own way, but you can move past that blockade by taking responsibility. It’s a hopeful message to end and summarise the album with, which is why it sits as the final song.
