Pity Party is a ballad based on a true story of an African (Ugandan) girl[me] that is entwined with guilt, shame, and remorse. Her state of loneliness leaves her with just one person to encourage her: HERSELF! Inspired by a series of unforgettable incidents at a particular season in my life, the story recapitulates the whim of emotions I experienced in those moments. This is conveyed by the vocal dynamic, chord progression, and cultural chants that depict the personas stream of consciousness. Played in 4/4 time at 50 beats per minute; the relatively ‘cantabile’ style allows for the vocal harmony to evoke strong emotions, carpeted by resounding picking of a simple chromatic quotas reef; and the incorporation of African drums. The Spoken Word is a dynamic and intentional part of the heuristic emotions felt; urging my Stream-of-Consciousness to quit the ‘pity party’ and “rise”. Whilst this ballad is predominantly melancholic, it concludes with a call to action to be positive through some much needed encouragement.
