Hope Map

Hope Map

„Hope Map“ was recorded at Jazzkeller Treptow in Berlin in Autumn 1996 starting off a one week German/Austrian tour. Ignaz Schick had just moved to Berlin a year before and this line-up was one of his first regular working groups in Berlin which in contrast to his Munich trio Decollage 3 focussed entirely on free improvisation. He had met East-Berlin bass player Matthias Bauer and Australian drummer Tony Buck (who had also just moved from Amsterdam to Berlin) that same year and performed several on and off gigs with both of them in different constellations. Forming an acoustic working band with such experienced and skilled players felt natural and was an important move forward. Schick soon after this first tour started to focus mostly on his electronic work and his saxophone performances become more rare events. You can hear that at this point and for his young age he was a talented and promising player with a strong melodic sense. The music of the trio is strictly improvised even though you might think that some sections sound like composed or pre-structured. Achieving such interplay in an open situation is only possible with such masterful and generous musicians like Tony Buck and Matthias Bauer. It is a pity that this trio disbanded soon after. Even more so we are excited that we found this beautiful document in the archive and that we can finally present it to a wider audience. credits released October 30, 2020 Ignaz Schick – alto saxophone Matthias Bauer – double bass, voice Tony Buck – drums, percussion unidentified woman in the audience – voice, chitchat, giggling Recorded November 15th 1996 at Jazzkeller Treptow by Andreas Lupo Lubisch Mastered 2020 at Q-136 Berlin by Ignaz Schick All music by Ignaz Schick/Matthias Bauer/Tony Buck Copyright by Zangi Music/Zarek and the artists 2020 ZORA20 [Zarek Online Release Archive]
